Upriver Dam was built in 1894 as a timber crib dam. It was upgraded in 1933 and again in the 1980’s and is still in use today. The Upriver Dam generates over 70 million kilowatts of electricity annually. Operated by the City of Spokane Water and Hydroelectric Services Department, electricity from the dam is used to pump water to every part of Spokane. Excess power is sold to Avista Utilities. The City of Spokane’s drinking water is some of the highest quality and lowest cost drinking water in the state. Tours Available – call 509-742-8141.
Riverside Park Water Reclamation Facility 4401 N. A.L. White Parkway 99205 509-625-4600 Tours are available on request. In operation since 1958, the City of Spokane’s award winning facility uses state of the art technology to provide advanced secondary treatment for 44 million gallons of sewage per day (mgd) during dry weather and up to 100 mgd of sewage mixed with storm runoff during wet weather. The sewer collection system has over 800 miles of sewage pipes, 28 pumping stations, and some underground tanks that reduce combined sewer overflows to the Spokane River during large storms.
Spokane County Water Reclamation Facility – Opened in 2011 with state of the art water treatment technology. The facility also provides a Water Resources Center that includes interactive exhibits about the facility, the natural environment and water stewardship. Spokane Waste to Energy Facility – 2900 S. Geiger Blvd. Residents and commercial establishments in Spokane County generate about 470,000 tons of solid waste annually.
